How Birkenstock sizes its shoes

Birkenstock uses one EU size for both a whole and a half US size, so there are no separate half sizes. For women, the US size is the EU size minus 31; for men, it's the EU size minus 33. UK sizes are the same for men and women at a given EU size, but they step unevenly: EU 39 is UK 5.5 and EU 40 is UK 7.

Birkenstock gives a foot length range for every size, measured heel to toe, and if you fall between two sizes it suggests the larger. Every size also comes in two widths: Narrow, marked with a solid footprint on the footbed, which Birkenstock says fits more like a medium width, and Regular, marked with an outline, for medium to wide feet.

By foot length on Birkenstock's own charts, a Birkenstock women's US 8 to 8.5 matches a men's US 6 to 6.5, and a men's US 9 to 9.5 matches a women's US 11 to 11.5.
