Add Tailor Size Guide as a preferred source on GoogleFootwear fit is its own problem — length, width, and brand-to-brand variation all matter. Here's how a size recommender handles shoes on Shopify, and how to set one up that actually cuts returns.
The Chart
| Input | Why footwear needs it | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Foot length (or usual size) | Primary size driver | Essential |
| Width | D/E/EE etc. — big return cause | Essential |
| Usual size + brand | Calibrates brand variation | Essential |
| Sock/use case | Athletic vs dress fit | Recommended |
| Arch / volume notes | Comfort fit | Optional |
Notes
Footwear isn't apparel. A shoe recommender can't just map height and weight to a size. It needs foot length and width, and it has to account for the fact that a US 10 in one brand is not a US 10 in another. The recommender that ignores width will keep generating returns.
Calibrate by brand. The most reliable footwear input is "what size are you in [brand]?" Because lasts differ so much, a brand anchor lets the recommender translate the shopper's known fit into your products' sizing far more accurately than raw measurements alone.
Handle width explicitly. If you sell multiple widths (B/D/EE), ask for it and recommend the width too — don't bury it. If you sell a single width, tell the shopper whether the shoe runs narrow or wide so they self-correct.
Add use case for athletic footwear. Running shoes are often sized up a half size; dress shoes fit closer. Asking "what will you use these for?" lets the recommender apply the right ease.
Feed it real data. Enter accurate internal length per size and collect post-purchase feedback ("ran small / true / ran large") so the recommender tightens up over time. For footwear, measurement accuracy and brand calibration matter more than any clever algorithm.
FAQs
How does a shoe size recommender work on Shopify?
It collects foot length (or usual size), width, and usually your size in a known brand, then matches that to each shoe's internal measurements and intended fit to recommend a size and width. Brand calibration is key because lasts vary so much.
Why does width matter for a footwear recommender?
Width is a major cause of shoe returns. A recommender that only predicts length will still produce poor fits for narrow or wide feet. If you sell multiple widths, the recommender should ask for and recommend width too.
Can a recommender handle different brands running differently?
Yes, if you calibrate by brand. Asking 'what size are you in [brand]?' lets the tool translate a known fit into your products' sizing, which is far more accurate than raw foot length alone.
Does a footwear recommender reduce returns?
It targets the biggest footwear return causes — wrong length and wrong width. With accurate internal measurements and brand calibration, it meaningfully reduces size-related shoe returns.
