    Belt Size Calculator

By , Marketing Specialist, Tailor Size Guide

The belt size calculator works two ways. Enter your pant waist size, and it adds the standard 2 inches and rounds up to the next even belt size: a 32 waist wears a 34 belt. Or measure a belt that already fits you, from the fold at the buckle to the hole you use most, and it gives the matching size.

Results come in US belt sizes (inches), EU belt lengths (centimetres, like 85 or 90) and letter sizes (S to XXL). Belts are sold in even sizes, and the aim is a belt that fastens on the middle hole, leaving room to tighten or loosen.

    Find your belt size

    Enter your pant waist size.

Why your belt size isn't your waist size

A belt has to go around your trousers, not just your body, and it has to reach past the buckle with some tail to tuck into the first loop. That's why the usual rule is belt size = pant waist size + 2 inches. If you wear 32-inch trousers, you'll want a 34-inch belt.

The belt size itself is measured from the fold of the leather at the buckle to the middle hole. So a size 34 belt fastens at 34 inches on the middle hole, with two holes either side for adjustment, usually an inch apart.

If your waist size is odd, say a 31, the calculator rounds up: 31 + 2 = 33, so a 34 belt. A belt one size too long just uses the next hole in; one too short won't fasten comfortably.

Method 1: from your pant size

This is the quickest method and works for most people.

    1. Find the waist size on your trousers or jeans, such as W32 or 32.
    2. Add 2 inches.
    3. Round up to the next even number if you get an odd one.

That's your belt size. Use the size from trousers you wear with a belt, not loose joggers or a size you haven't worn in years. For jeans, the label waist and your real waist can differ because of vanity sizing; our guide to what W30 L32 means explains why.

Method 2: from a belt that fits

This is the most accurate method, especially if you wear your trousers high or low.

    1. Take a belt that fits well.
    2. Lay it flat.
    3. Measure from the fold at the buckle (where the leather bends around the buckle bar, not the end of the buckle) to the hole you use most.
    4. Enter that number. If it's odd, the calculator rounds to the nearest even size.

If the hole you use is the last one, or the first, your current belt is the wrong size. Size down or up accordingly so you land on the middle hole.

    Method 3: measure your body

No belt and no trouser size to go on? Put on the trousers you'll wear the belt with, run a tape measure through the belt loops, and measure where the belt will sit. Add 1 to 2 inches for the overlap, then round to the nearest even size. Our guide on how to measure your waist covers where to measure.

Belt widths and when to wear them

Size is only half of choosing a belt. Width needs to match the trousers' belt loops and the occasion.

    WidthStyleBest for
    1 in (25 mm)SkinnyDresses, women's casual, summer suits
1¼ in (32 mm)Dress beltSuits and dress trousers
1½ in (38 mm)Standard casual dressChinos, sport coats, smart casual
1¾ in (44 mm)Casual or westernJeans and casual wear
2 in (51 mm)Wide casual or utilityWorkwear, heavy denim

A dress belt that's too wide won't fit through suit trouser loops; a skinny belt looks lost on heavy jeans.

    Women's belts

Women's belts are often sold in letter sizes (S, M, L) or numbered by dress size rather than inches. Many are worn at the natural waist or over a dress, not on trouser loops, so the right size depends on where you'll wear it:

    • On trousers or jeans: use the pant size method above.
    • At the natural waist over a dress or top: measure your waist where the belt will sit and add about 1 to 2 inches.
    • On the hips: measure around the hips where the belt will sit.

Check whether the brand lists the total length or the length to the middle hole. They're often different by several inches.

    Reversible, ratchet and western belts

    • Reversible belts are sized like standard belts, but the buckle turns, so check that the fit works on both sides.
    • Ratchet or track belts have no holes. They're often sold long and cut to length at home, so follow the maker's trimming instructions.
    • Western belts often have wider straps and bigger buckles that take up more length; some makers suggest going a size up.
    • Kids' belts are usually elastic or adjustable; size by waist and allow room to grow.

    Converting belt sizes

    • US to EU: EU belt sizes are the belt length in centimetres, in 5 cm steps. A US 34 is about 85 cm, a 36 about 90 cm.
    • Inches to cm: multiply by 2.54. A 34-inch belt is 86.4 cm, sold as an 85 or 90 depending on the brand.

Our belt size conversion from US to EU has the full table.

Signs your belt is the wrong size

    • Fastening on the last hole: too small.
    • Fastening on the first hole with a long tail flapping past the loops: too big.
    • Extra holes punched: wrong size to begin with.

A leather belt can be shortened by a cobbler at the buckle end; it can't be made longer.

    Worked examples

    • A 33-inch waist. 33 + 2 = 35, rounded up to a 36 belt, about 90 cm in EU sizing.
    • A belt that fits, measured at 37 inches to the hole you use. That rounds to a 36 or 38; if you use the middle hole on your current belt, choose the size closer to your measurement (38 is the safer pick, since a belt can be shortened but not lengthened).
    • Women's jeans in a size 10 (about a 30 to 31-inch waist). Add 2 and round up: a 32 to 34 belt, usually a Small to Medium.
    • Buying in Europe. A US 34 belt is an EU 85; a US 36 is a 90.

    How materials change belt fit

    Belt typeHow it fits
Full-grain leatherFirm at first, eases slightly with wear; size accurately
Bonded or "genuine" leatherLess durable; may stretch or crack over time
Braided or woven (leather or elastic)The prong goes through any point, so fit is very flexible
Canvas web with slide buckleFully adjustable; one size often fits a wide range
Ratchet or trackNo holes; adjusts in small steps and is usually cut to length

Braided and web belts are forgiving if you're between sizes or your waist changes through the year.

    Looking after a leather belt

Store belts hanging or loosely rolled, not tightly coiled. Condition leather occasionally, keep it away from direct heat, and rotate belts so one doesn't stretch out at the same hole. If you've been wearing one hole for years and the leather has stretched there, it may be time to size down.

    Belts for children

Children's belts are usually sized by age or waist, and many are elastic or adjustable so they last through a growth spurt. Buy for the current waist with room to tighten, rather than several sizes up.

    How a belt should fit

    1. It fastens on the middle hole, with two holes either side for adjustment.
    2. The tail reaches the first belt loop after the buckle, and ideally tucks into it, without reaching the second.
    3. It sits flat without the leather buckling or the holes stretching.
    4. The buckle sits centred with your trouser fly, or just off it for some casual styles.
    5. It's the right width for the belt loops: a dress belt should slide through suit trouser loops easily.

Matching a belt to your outfit

A few long-standing rules, if you like to follow them:

    • Match leathers. A brown belt with brown shoes, a black belt with black shoes. Exact shade matches aren't needed, but a similar tone looks deliberate.
    • Match metals. A silver buckle goes with a silver watch; a brass buckle with gold tones.
    • Dress belts are slimmer, about 1¼ inches, with a plain buckle. Casual belts can be wider and more textured.
    • Suit trousers with side adjusters don't need a belt at all, and a belt over side adjusters looks cluttered.

These are style conventions, not fit rules, so treat them as a starting point.

    If you sell belts online

Belt returns usually come from one confusion: shoppers order their waist size and get a belt that's too short. On your product pages:

    • Explain the "waist plus 2" rule right next to the size selector.
    • State how the size is measured (to the middle hole), and the total length.
    • Give the width and the number of holes.
    • Show EU and letter equivalents if you sell internationally.

Our size guide for belt brands covers the details, and Tailor Size Guide can show a belt chart on every belt product.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I figure out my belt size?

Take your pant waist size and add 2 inches, then round up to an even number. A 32 waist wears a 34 belt. Or measure a belt that fits, from the fold at the buckle to the hole you use.

Is belt size the same as waist size?

No. A belt is usually 2 inches larger than your pant waist size, because it goes around your trousers and needs to reach past the buckle.

What size belt for a 34 waist?

A 36 belt, which is about 90 cm in EU sizing and usually a Medium.

What does an 85 cm belt mean?

An EU 85 belt is 85 cm from the buckle fold to the middle hole. It's about a US 34 and suits a 32-inch pant waist.

Should a belt fasten on the middle hole?

Yes. A belt is sized to the middle hole so you can tighten or loosen it. If you're on the first or last hole, you need a different size.

Can you shorten a leather belt?

Yes, a cobbler can shorten most leather belts at the buckle end. Belts can't be made longer, so if you're between sizes, size up.

What belt size is a Medium?

A Medium belt usually fits pant waist sizes of about 32 to 34 inches, which is a belt size of about 34 to 36 or 85 to 90 cm. Brands vary, so check their chart.
